“Stole it? You’re Out!” “Sold it? You’re Out!”

Netflix does not provide service in China. However, in 60+ Chinese illegal web sites are illegally distributing Netflix Original Series ‘Squid Game’, and ‘#SquidGame’ has well-received, reaching more than 1.77 billion hits on Chinese social media Weibo.

Besides China’s illegal distribution of ‘Squid Game’, a bigger problem is that through e-commerce platforms such as AliExpress and eBay, Chinese companies are illegally selling ‘Squid Game’ related products.

VANK sees the illegal distribution as an issue, but a bigger problem is with Chinese companies earning credit by illegally ‘Squid Game’ related products abroad.

VANK wants to make the above situation an international issue to prevent illegal distribution of Korean contents and illegal overseas sales of ‘Squid Game’ products by China following China’s Northeast Project that takes away Korea’s history and Culture Project that takes away hanbok and kimchi.

VANK had just begun a petition that reports China’s illegal distribution of ‘Squid Game’ on change.org, Also, VANK has created new posters in Korean, English and Chinese that criticizes China’s illegal actions regarding ‘Squid Game’ by parodying the lines of it.

By depicting broken Chinese flag on dalgona candy which was featured in ‘Squid Game’, it symbolizes a warning that if the Chinese government would not actively track down and punish illegal distributors, the national image of China would fall.

Through this poster campaign, VANK expects the Chinese government to find out all Chinese web sites that illegally distributed Korean contents, and issue an order to stop acts of infringement in order to firmly block profit increase through illegal sales of ‘Squid Game’ related items in and outside China.

As ‘Squid Game’ related products are being predicted to be the most popular Halloween costume this year, VANK hopes Koreans around the world to actively inform the issue with global posters and global petition in order to stop China from earning huge profit by selling Korean contents.

Is it okay to peep into something fun? Stop China’s illegal distribution of Korean contents!

Is it okay to peep into something fun?

‘Squid Game’, the Korean Netflix Original drama, topped in all 83 countries that provide Netflix. But in China, where Netflix is not provided, ‘Squid Game’ is being illegally distributed on a large scale.

Although Netflix is not provided in China, Squid Game related items are on sale on Chinese Shopping Apps, and on Weibo, hashtag #What if we play Dalgona Bbopgi in China? hit 140 million views.

China’s illegal distribution of Korean contents does not only apply to Squid Game.

According to research, China has been confirmed as the largest illegal distributor of Korean contents over the past five years. China ranked 1st with 85,000 disclosed cases among 410,000 cases.

Nowadays, as Korean wave being worldwide hit, we should tell China’s illegal distribution of Korean contents to the world and stop this from happening.

Accordingly, VANK starts a global campaign to form global public opinion to stop China’s illegal distribution of Korean contents.

In order for this to happen, VANK created global posters in Korean and English to tell of this issue through social media.

The poster starts with the title “‘Squid Game’ topped in 83 countries! Then, is it okay to peep into something fun?”, and it reports the fact of Squid Game being illegally distributed in China on a large scale, and it appeals to you to join the Global Petition to stop China’s illegal acts on Korean contents.

Which of the following best describes the purpose of Humboldt Forum?

VANK starts a global campaign that tells the world about a German museum that was built to reflect on German imperialism is in fact used as a propaganda tool for representing distortion on Korean history and Japanese colonialism.

On September 23, the “Humboldt Forum”, a museum in Berlin, Germany, with the meaning of reflecting on the days of German imperialism and reflecting on the history of looting by Germany on non-European countries, were opened on the site of the former Prussian royal palace. In order to express this meaning, the entire 3rd floor of the museum was filled with artifacts from African countries, where Germany had colonized.

In the recent opened Humboldt Forum, artifacts from Korea, China, and Japan, which were not colonies of Germany, are also exhibited here. However, the Korean Pavilion is only one-tenth the size of the adjacent Japanese and Chinese Pavilion, and it is causing a problem as the Korean Pavilion is introducing distorted perceptions regarding Korea.

In the Chinese Pavilion, various relics such as the throne of the Qing dynasty are displayed, and in the Japanese Pavilion, a model of a traditional tea house is displayed along with the relics in a large space. On the other hand, the Korean Pavilion is only 60 square meters, one-tenth the size of Chinese and Japanese Pavilion. If this is left alone, Korea will be perceived as a country without culture and relics in terms of the structure of the pavilion, and the forum can give distorted impression that Korean culture is only part of Chinese or Japanese culture.

What’s worse is that the description of the pavilion introduces Joseon’s ceramics and the Imjin War(1592-1598), a symbol of Japanese aggression, as if introducing Korean exhibits to represent Japan’s colonialist position.

While most relics in the Korean Pavilion are about Korean ceramics, the description explains as if a lot of Korean ceramics flowed into the forum because Japanese tea ceremony masters admired it. It also introduced that Japan took away Korean potters during the Imjin War.

This shows that the Humboldt Forum which was built to reflect on German imperialism is rather supporting and representing Japan’s history of invasion.

In particular, these issues related to the Korean Pavilion had already been noted at least 7 years ago, but the Forum opened as it is without any adjustment.

If the Forum is left alone, it could be a propaganda tool for representing Japanese colonialism, rather than reflecting on the wrongdoings of German imperialism.

Accordingly, VANK request the Humboldt Forum to solve problems regarding the limited space on its Korean Pavilion, and started a global campaign that the Korean Pavilion to be modified in accordance with the Forum’s purpose.

VANK created digital posters in English and Korean in order to raise our voice on the Forum’s neglection of its purpose.

The poster parodies as if it were introducing a special event for the opening of the Humboldt Forum, and it leads to a quiz about the purpose of the forum and leads to choose a correct answer.

The answer to the quiz is choice #1: to reflect on German imperialism, but the Forum has not abided by its aim, has represented Japanese colonialism, moreover, has supported the history of imperialism in East Asia. This is what the quiz is trying to emphasize.

Underneath shows a link where you can find the answer, and on this link, you amy find the Global Petition regarding the problem of the Humboldt Forum.

Recently, as the Korean Wave Hallyu has been well received around the world, with Korean drams taking the number one spot on Netflix worldwide, interest in Korea is now extending beyond popular culture to Korean history and culture.

In this situation, if we do not properly respond to German museum’s distorted historical awareness regarding Korea, Korean history distortion may spread more quickly along the Korean wave trend.

VANK is looking forward to Koreans around the world to actively tell the world citizens about this situation through Global Petition and Poster.

Jikji 1377 Campaign

VANK(Voluntary Agency Network of Korea) starts 1377 Campaign that promote Jikji to worldwide history books, world history textbooks, libraries, and educational institutions.

Commemorating the year 1377 that Jikji was printed, 1377 Campaign is a campaign for promoting Jikji to 1377 history books world wide, 1377 world history textbooks, 1377 libraries, and 1377 educational institutions.

In order for this, VANK created and is distributing 8 digital posters in Korean and English that introduces cases that VANK members have registered Jikji by their request in worldwide history books, world history textbooks, libraries, and educational institutions.

Each poster describes venues or books that VANK members had registered Jikji. The posters show the homepage of The British Library, the second largest library in the world, Awesome stories website, one of famous American educational portals, and a history book by DK, a British publisher. Also one of the posters shows a history textbook by National Geographic, an American publisher, in which Jikji was registered by Korean-Americans’ effort in 2018.

The poster describes the latest world history book, world history textbook, library, and educational institution that included Jikji, a great invention of human history, printed with movable metal type printing technology.

Korea’s Jikji, printed with movable metal type in 1377, predates Gutenberg’s bible by 78 years, but has been omitted in world history textbooks of the Western world.

Because of this, youths do not appreciate Korean history properly.

Therefore, the posters claim that in order for youths to learn accurate Asian history, Jikji should be introduced in many world history books.

Therefore, VANK has been working on this 1377 campaign to inform worldwide history books, world history textbooks, libraries, and educational institutions of Jikji, and we hope world citizens including Koreans around the world to join in promoting Jikji together with VANK’s 1377 campaign.

On the below, you may check VANK’s Jikji web site http://jikji.prkorea.com/english where you can access information on VANK’s effort to register Jikji in various books, portals, and institutions, and you can also use the information from the web site to tell the world of Jikji.

With 100 million Korean Wave fans around the world, it is a chance for us to introduce world citizens of Korean history as their interest in Korean popular culture has risen recently.

Please join VANK’s various campaigns that expand the growing interest of people around the world in Korean pop culture to Korean history and culture as a whole.

Let the world know about the resistance movement of Afghan women against the Taliban!

As the Taliban retook control over Afghanistan in 20 years, they are oppressing women’s rights. They are, in particular, forcing women to wear burka, a head-to-ankle robe. In response, Afghan women began to show that burka is not an Afghan culture, and in order to inform the international community of misinformation spread by the Taliban, they are protesting by posting photos of them wearing colorful and beautiful Afghan traditional clothes on their social media with hashtag #DoNotTouchMyClothes and #AfghanistanCulture.

Afghan women want the world to pay attention to what the Taliban is doing in Afghanistan, and they want the world to be avoice for Afghan women.

VANK has been working hard to inform the international community about the issue of comfort women by the Japanese military as a global women’s right issue beyond the historical issues of Korea and Japan. We believe that the campaign to inform the world about the resistance movement of Afghan women against the Taliban is just as important as an activity to raise awareness about the comfort women issue.

In response, VANK started a global campaign that tells the world of Afghan women’s resistance movement.

VANK has created and distributing digital posters on social media presenting Afghan women’s resistance movement #DoNotTouchMyClothes campaign.

Please participate in the global poster campaign and inform the world about Afghan women’s rights!

Germany ‘reflecting on’ history of aggression vs. Japan ‘covering up’ history of aggression

Germany ‘reflecting on’ history of aggression vs. Japan ‘covering up’ history of aggression

In 2001, Germany registered Zollverein Coal Mine of city of Essen in UNESCO World Heritage List. Zollverein was the biggest coal production site in Europe in the 20th century and is the place Jewish people and POWs of World War Ⅱ were forced into labor. Germany has made it clear that this is not a World Heritage Site that glorifies crimes of aggression, but a site that reflects crimes of aggression. In order to do this, the German government installed a monument in the site and explained facts about ‘forced laborers’ along with photos of Nazi victims.

Germany has been reflecting on history of aggression by doing this, but Japan has been covering up history of aggression through its World Heritage.

A recent UNESCO investigation has reconfirmed that Japan has in fact distorted the history of forced labor of Koreans on Hashima Island(a.k.a. Battleship Island), which was registered as a World Heritage site. On 22 July 2021, UNESCO passed a resolution that 23 Japanese industrial facilities including the Hashima island has been mismanaged. This resolution states that the Japanese government has not properly explained the facts about forced labor in these facilities during the 1940s.

In 2015, the Japanese government has promised that it will display exhibits that commemorate the forced laborers at the meiji industrial sites including the Hashima Island when the sites were going to be registered at UNESCO. However, the heritage information center that opened in Shinjuku Tokyo in June 2020 did not display any testimony of victims and distorted history by only displaying Hashima residents’ testimonies that they have never seen ethnic discrimination nor forced labor.

VANK believes that now is an opportunity to inform the world of the reality of the Japanese government’s history distortion, which has been reconfirmed by UNESCO’s investigation that Japan has distorted the history of forced labor of Koreans.

Therefore, VANK created digital posters in Korean, English and Chinese that reports Japan’s hypocritical stance that covers up history of aggression, compared to Germany which reflects on history of aggression, and started a campaign to tell the world of issue through social media.

In particular, VANK created English poster in order to tell world citizens of Japan’s history distortion of Hashima island, and Chinese poster in order to tell the same issue to Chinese who share the history of aggression of Japanese imperialist era.

The poster introduces Zollverein Coal Mine of Essen, Germany which was registered in UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, shows that Germany reflects on its history of aggression.

In comparison, the poster also introduces Japan’s history distortion, saying “There were no racial discrimination nor forced labor”, while registering 23 Meiji industrial facilities including the Hashima island in UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

Along with this, it introduces the text of the resolution that UNESCO expressed “strong regret” for Japan’s history distortion.

VANK hopes that Koreans around the world use this poster to inform world citizens about Japan’s history distortion that ‘covers up’ history of aggression.

The poster also introduces the petition link (maywespeak.com/unesco) that reports Japanese governments history distortion on Hashima island.

Penalize racist Pinchas Zukerman!

Hey! Jewish violinist Mr. Pinchas Zukerman!

Don’t you know how the Holocaust began?

Holocaust did not fall suddenly from the skies!

The tragedy of Auschwitz had begun with hatred

and the Nazi’s war crimes such as Holocaust

begun with racial discrimination.

Stop Racism Towards Asians!

————————————————————————-

VANK started a global campaign that reports the international community of the violinist Mr. Zukerman who made racist remarks by saying that “Koreans don’t sing. It’s not in their DNA.”

Recently, worldly renowned violinist Pinchas Zukerman expressed racist comments to Korean, Chinese and Japanese musicians!

Born in Israel, Jewish prof. Zukerman now teaches in Manhattan School of Music. His parents survived in Polish Nazi Concentration Camp and settled in Israel in 1947.

But the one that has kept the history of pain expressed racist comments to Asians during a virtual masterclass hosted by the Juilliard School in 25th June.

After saying “If you don’t know how to play, then sing it” to two sisters of Asian descent sisters, Zukerman, not satisfied with the performance, said “I know in Korea, they don’t sing.”

Remarks that “they don’t sing” is a metaphorical expression of criticism for the lack of artistry and musicality.

Zukerman asked, “Then where are you from?” to the sisters who said they were not Korean, and to the answer that they were of Japanese descent, he said, “It’s the same that Japanese people don’t sing.”

At the end of the class, Zukerman said “Koreans don’t sing, It’s not in their DNA”, and this astonished the audiences of the real-time class.

Seem to be aware of “It’s not in their DNA” remarks, the Juilliard which were to upload all the virtual classes video on its homepage, uploaded videos except Zukerman’s lecture.

This is not the first time Zukerman expressed racist remarks.

In the past, Zukerman also said “You guys in China, you never use metronome. You just go fast, fast and loud, because when you go fast and loud, you think you go number one. I don’t think so, okay?”

Such remarks can cause serious problems in that they demean performers from Korea, China and Japan by locking them in the frame of racial stereotypes.

Due to the Covid-19, cases of hate crime towards Asians around the world has soared recently.

Above all, we should stop influential individuals like Zukerman from racially discriminating Asians.

If we cannot stop the spread of racism through world-famous figures, a second Holocaust tragedy could come before humanity.

Even the worst war crimes in mankind, in which 17 million people were slaughtered by the Nazis, started with racism.

The tragedy of Auschwitz, in which more than one million people were sacrificed for no reason, began with discrimination, hatred and oppression.

We should prevent racial discrimination and hate that created Holocaust and Auschwitz from reviving in the 21st century.

Therefore, VANK starts a global campaign that reports the international community of the violinist Mr. Zukerman who made racist remarks by saying that “Koreans don’t sing. It’s not in their DNA.”

First of all, VANK started a global petition on the world’s biggest petition site, demanding penalization of Pinchas Zukerman by the Manhattan School of Music.

VANK also created digital posters and is distributing them to the world that tells of Mr. Zukerman’s racist remarks.

The poster features Auschwitz on the background, and warns the global community that Pinchas Zukerman’s racist remarks could lead to war crimes of the Nazis in the Holocaust.

Through this campaign, VANK is looking forward to Koreans around the world to participate in this campaign so that the western world could be led to change its views on racism and discrimination toward Asians.

UNESCO Report on Japan’s Meiji Industrial sites – Now Keep Your Promises!

A Liar ends in a cliff

You’ve got no place to hide.

Now Keep Your Promises!

Refusing installation of exhibits on victims

History distortion on Koreans’ forced labor

Denying forced labor in Battleship Island

A recent UNESCO investigation has reconfirmed that Japan has in fact distorted the history of forced labor of Koreans on Hashima Island(a.k.a. Battleship Island), which was registered as a World Heritage site.

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre has published a report on its homepage of a decision that Japanese industrial facilities such as the Hashima island has distorted the history of forced labor.

This report pointed out that the facilities have not properly notified the fact that people including Koreans were forced into labor in the 1940s.

Above all, the World Heritage Committee sent a message of “great regret” that Japan has not taken proper action on commemorating the deceased, and especially that at first Japan did not keep its promises to inform the world of the history of forced labor by the Japanese Imperialist era.

In the past, the Japanese government has promised that it will display exhibits in 2015 that commemorate the forced laborers at the meiji industrial sites including the Hashima Island.

However, the heritage information center that opened in Shinjuku Tokyo in June 2020 did not display any testimony of victims and distorted history by only displaying Hashima residents’ testimonies that they have never seen ethnic discrimination nor forced labor.

VANK believes that now is an opportunity to inform the world of the reality of the Japanese government’s history distortion, which has been reconfirmed by UNESCO’s investigation that Japan has in fact distorted the history of forced labor of Koreans.

Therefore, VANK created posters in Korean and English that criticize the Japanese government’s repetitive lies towards the UNESCO and the international community of the truth of Hashima Island and the history of forced labor on Koreans.

The poster features Japanese government, wearing the Rising Sun Flag symbolizing Japanese Imperialism, running towards the verge of a cliff while being criticized by the international community as the Japanese government is “Refusing installation of exhibits on victims”, “History distortion on Koreans’ forced labor”, and “Denying forced labor in Battleship Island”.

The poster also includes phrases telling the Japanese government that there is no place to hide for a liar and the liar eventually ends in a cliff, so the Japanese government should keep its promises towards the international community.

The poster also describes a global petition that disclose Japanese government’s history distortion of Hashima Island to the global community.

Congrats to Suga for winning Triple Crown in 3 new sports at Tokyo Olympics!

Congrats to Suga for winning Triple Crown in 3 new sports at Tokyo Olympics!

VANK starts a global campaign that criticizes the Japanese government which is utilizing the Tokyo Olympics politically and as a propaganda arena for the revival of Imperialism.

—————————————————————————

Congrats to Suga for winning Triple Crown

in 3 new sports at Tokyo Olympics!

(Prime Minister of Japan)

Territory Invasion (Dokdo), Racism (Rising Sun Flag), History Distortion (Sohn Kee-chung)

—————————————————————————

VANK initiated a global campaign that discloses Japanese government’s invasion of Korean territory Dokdo, racist acts with the Rising Sun Flag, and distorting history by misleading the truth of Sohn Kee-chung to the international community in the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Recently, the Japanese government distorted Korean island Dokdo as Japanese island on the Tokyo Olympic Homepage, allowed the use of Rising Sun Flag for cheering in the arenas, and belied Berlin Olympics Gold Medalist Sohn Kee-chung who is Korean as Japanese in the Tokyo Olympic Museum.

VANK would like to globally inform the fact that the Japanese government is using the Olympics which should pursue international peace and friendship politically. Also, in particular, that Japan is using the Games as a propaganda ground to whitewash the past imperialistic aggression by distorting Dokdo and allowing the Rising Sun Flag to be used when cheering.

VANK created digital posters in Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese in order to inform the world of Japanese government’s such conducts through social media.

The poster parodies with three new sports (Territory Invasion, Racism, History Distortion) in the Tokyo Olympics, and congratulates the current Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Suga Yoshihide winning Triple Crown on these new sports.

On the uniform gold medalist Mr. Suga is wearing depicts Dokdo, Rising Sun Flag, and Sohn Kee-chung.

Through this, VANK informs the world of Japan’s acts of trying to extort Korean territory Dokdo, discriminating with the use of Rising Sun Flag, and distorting history of Sohn Kee-chung in the Tokyo Olympic Museum.

The poster also introduces a global petition that informs the world of Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee’s issue of damaging the Olympic Spirit.

Olympic Spirit refers to the elevation of the mind and soul, overcoming differences between nationalities and cultures, embracing friendship, a sense of solidarity, and fair play; ultimately leading to the contribution towards world peace and the betterment of the world.

However, the Japanese government pronounced that they would not prohibit using the Rising Sun Flag, the flag representing war of aggression, when cheering and bringing the flag-designed uniform to the Tokyo Olympics.

Above all, the Japanese government has distorted Dokdo, a precious territory of a neighboring country, on the Tokyo Olympics website and started telling the world that the island belongs to Japan.

Also, Sohn Kee-chung, 1936 Berlin Olympic marathon gold medalist, is displayed as if he were Japanese in the section displaying Japanese gold medalists of all time at the Japan Olympic museum nearby the Olympic arenas.

We must not neglect or keep silent with the actions of the Japanese government that fundamentally undermine the Olympic Spirit.

Therefore, VANK expects people worldwide to join the global petition and share the poster towards people who do not know about these issues.

Anyone interested in joining VANK’s campaign can download the poster and share it on your social media channel or let the world know of this issue by joining the global petition.

Are you going to extend the Great Wall beyond the Earth to the Moon?

Are you going to extend the Great Wall beyond Korea to the world?

Are you going to extend the Great Wall beyond the Earth to the Moon?

Recently, VANK has analyzed 40 world history textbooks published by major publishers such as Dorling Kindersley(DK), Glencoe, Times, National Geographic, McDougal Littell, Oxford, Pearson Longman, and Apprentice Hall.

The result came out as only 4 books accurately depicted the eastern end of the Great Wall as Shanhaiguan in Hebei Province, near Beijing on the map. However, 7 books depicted the Great Wall as far as North Pyeongan Province and South Pyeongan Province, and 29 volumes depicted the Great Wall as far as Sinuiju and the Amnok River(Yalu River).

Today, 15 years after the Northeast Project (2002-2007), China has removed the traces of Goguryeo Bakjak Fortress near Amnok River from the world history textbooks published by famous publishers around the world, and had built Hushan Fortress on the zone, stubbornly insisting that the fortress belongs to the Great Wall.

What is more serious is that the Great Wall of China is a representative cultural heritage of China that is essentially introduced in famous world history textbooks.

In these world history textbooks, stories about the Great Wall and Emperor Qin Shi Huang are all introduced, but China is secretly stealing the history of Goguryeo and Balhae of Korea using the Great Wall, which is their representative cultural heritage.

If we cannot stop the Chinese government from extorting the history of Goguryeo and Balhae through the Great Wall, in the near future, teenagers worldwide will naturally perceive the history of Goguryeo and Balhae as Chinese history.

American World History textbooks, in particular, are studied by American junior high students. and the distorted perception of history acquired in junior high can have a major impact on them as they become adults.

American textbooks are revised every six years, and California textbooks in particular were revised in 2016 and will be done again in 2022. Accordingly, VANK will inform publishers of the distorted history of the Great Wall not only for California, but throughout the United States, and work on revisions.

Therefore, VANK intends to expand Chinas distortion of the Great Wall not only as a problem of Korea and China, but also to China and other countries around the world.

For this to happen, VANK created posters in Korean and English saying,

“Are you going to extend the Great Wall beyond Korea to the world?”

“Are you going to extend the Great Wall beyond the Earth to the Moon?”

and started a campaign on social media to tell the world of the issue.

The poster parodies that China’s reckless expansion of the Great Wall continues to the world, and leads to a Global Petition to report the international community of China’s distortion of the Great Wall which is stretching like a rubber band.

VANK believes that if we leave the world map in the textbooks with the Great Wall extending all the way to the Korean Peninsula, one day, China will be able to demand that the international community recognize North Korea’s territory as China’s territory based on the Great Wall.

Therefore, VANK expects Korean netizens and overseas compatriots to actively participate in the campaign to distribute Digital Posters, join Global Petition, and to send letters of protest to these textbook publishers.
